Did the property sin? – Korach

The destruction of Korach, Datan & Aviram, by Gustave Dore, 1865

When the earth opened up to swallow Korach and his supporters, their property (r’chush) also fell into the hole in the ground (Num. 16:32).

We understand that the human beings had done wrong and deserved punishment, but did their property commit a sin?

The Book of Proverbs says (18:23) that the poor speak beseechingly and the rich speak roughly. The rich think highly of themselves because they have money and it is really their money that is speaking.

In the Korach story the possessions of the rich cause them to sin. The sins that caused punishment were not only human wrongs but money and property.
