Judah makes all the difference – Vayyiggash

Judah converses with Joseph, by James Tissot

We open the sidra with a mention of Judah, the brother whose part in events makes all the difference.

It is because of Judah that we are called Jews and our religion is called Judaism. Not simply because of the name Judah, but because the prophets say that our role in history is to make all the difference and to be a light unto the nations (Isaiah 49:6).

Not only towards the nations should we make our light shine, but internally too. We should never fail to recognise the difference that Judaism can make in the life of every Jew.
