Bias or blessing – Sh’lach L’cha
When Moses changed his disciple’s name from Hoshea to Y’hoshua (Num. 13:15) there were complaints of favouritism.
Weren’t there were other talented men around who could all be given consideration instead of simply taking the path of love and bias?
In truth, Moses had watched Y’hoshua and Calev at work. Ten of the twelve spies looked for an easy answer and backed each other when they found one. Y’hoshua and Calev were prepared to examine all the issues and to follow a lonely path because they suspected the validity of the majority opinion.
Moses’ choice of a successor was not based on bias but on the genuine belief that his choice was the one that was best for the people.
