A great kohen
The Al HaNissim prayer calls Mattityahu kohen gadol.
Does it mean metaphorically that Mattityahu was one of the great names amongst the priestly tribe? Or was he literally a high priest?
The latter is possible. He was removed from office because he criticised the occupying power. The Greek enemy tried (in vain) to weaken Judaism by removing traditionalists from office.
