    Purimspiels – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. Why is there so much play-acting on Purim?

    A. Many good reasons:
    • The Purim story lends itself to dramatic presentations with villains, beautiful maids, weak kings and powerful politicians.

    • It was always a light-hearted festival which contrasted with the gloom and uncertainty of the rest of the year.

    • As in a pantomime, people can take on a persona that would otherwise be unthinkable.
