Giving or receiving the Torah – Ask the Rabbi (Shavu’ot)
Q. Why do we call Shavu’ot “the Time of the Giving of the Torah” instead of “the Time of Receiving the Torah”?
A. A Chassidic teacher said that it is the time of the giving of the Torah, because it was an event that occurred once at a specific moment. But there never was or could be one “time of receiving the Torah”. Every person, every generation, must receive the Torah for themselves.
