A sacrifice every day – Vayyera

The binding of Isaac, by A Losenko
The binding of Isaac is referred to in the morning prayers every day. Joseph Karo, author of the Shulchan Aruch, says this brings to mind the virtue of the patriarchs so that God will be merciful to us for their sake.

But there may be another, deeper reason. At the beginning of the day we all need to remember to face our duty prepared, if need be, to sacrifice our own comfort, convenience and material advantage for the sake of what God requires.

To start the day determined to seek personal benefit at the expense of others is a thought that needs to be firmly put in its place.
