How many Haggadahs? – Ask the Rabbi

    Q. How many Haggadahs are there?

    The Sulzbach Haggadah, 1755

    A. Thousands have been published.

Haggadah bibliography analyses Haggadot on artistic, literary and bookcraft criteria as well as in terms of the differing rites and practices of communities in various places and periods.

Internally, the text itself indicates that there are probably three Haggadot within the traditional text – three distinct attempts to tell the story, the first beginning Avadim Hayinu, the second Baruch HaMakom, and the third Tzei Ul’mad.

In due course all were pieced together – though not without controversy.
