Generations – Tol’dot

Jews are a people of history. History is their identity, their cradle, their inspiration. All are part of the story, and all have their own personal story.

Just as the sidra begins, “These are the generations of Isaac”, so each of us should be able to say, “These are my generations, this is where I come from.”

It does not always work like that. The Holocaust has broken the link between many of us and our ancestry. Some simply do not know who their forebears were. Historical research may help, but it has its limits.

Yet whatever we find out about our past, there is something we can do about our future. We can give our children such a strong Jewish identity that our descendants will be so Jewish that we ourselves, wherever we may then be, can look upon them and proudly say, “Yes, these are my generations…”
